Lyme Disease Series - Part I

We have included this series on Lyme Disease from Dr. Jernigan's Daily Health Tips on Facebook. Join us at www.facebook.com/doctordavidjernigan
This is the first in a series on Lyme Disease and other infections. Bacteria-focused Treatments in Lyme Disease May be Incorrect.

In most Lyme disease treatment philosophies the focus of every treatment revolves around the killing of bacteria and coinfections.

Whether the treatment is conventional antibiotics, botanical antimicrobial supplements, or antimicrobial rife-frequencies all of these treatment focus on the “bugs” as the ultimate cause of dis-ease, and their annihilation the ultimate cure. Is this treatment focus correct?
Clinical research suggests that in the many of the people who experience long-term recovery from chronic Lyme disease (CLD) the bacteria and coinfections played only a secondary role in their recovery.

The focus of this tip is to propose a bio-centric, instead of microbe-centric focus in the treatment of people suffering from what is generally called CLD.

While many doctors and people can point to remissions in individuals, brought about by antibiotic-type treatments, the ultimate role played by these drugs/supplements is over-glamorized, while the restorative functions of the human body is downplayed or ignored altogether. Health restoration is a function of the body, not a function of a drug.

In an illness where all LD laboratory tests demonstrate a high, false-negative rate, even in profoundly sick LD cases, the extensive antibiotic treatment and subsequent finding of a negative lab test means very little to validate the effectiveness of the treatment.

In my opinion, having interviewed thousands of people treated primarily with long-term, natural, and conventional antibacterial medications, the vast majority of people report that they have nowhere near the quality of life they once enjoyed.
While bringing down the population of offending microbes is important, their complete annihilation is not ultimately what creates the restoration of optimum health

Interestingly, when I spoke with the owners to two of the top Lyme research laboratories, each told me that they had never seen anyone's blood tests completely clear of the Lyme bacteria, even after years of antibiotic cocktails, rife treatments, botanical formulas, homeopathic remedy, or silver products. Yet, many of the people tested had regained their quality of life for many years and were no longer considered sick.

It turns out we all have Strep bacteria in our respiratory tract, but we may never have "Strep throat." This same Strep bacteria we were told could kill us...and it could in the right body environment.

It is the same with LD. A person may always have the bacteria yet never have the disease as long as they maintain a healthy condition.
Just testing positive to having a certain bacteria or virus does not mean you will come down with a disease from that bug. Nor are you a ticking time bomb.
Treat the bugs and more bugs will follow. Treat the human condition and health will follow.

Epsom Salt Detox Bath

Hydrogen Peroxide/Epsom Salt Detox Bath

This is one of my absolute favorite bath therapies. It is the first thing we do for our own family whenever we feel we are developing a cold or illness. Not only does it detoxify the body and relieve pain, but it seems to also stop many infections quickly and help the body regain balance. Through medical studies, this therapy has been shown to relieve pain that did not even respond to narcotic medicines.

You will need:
  • 4-6 cups Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate)
  • 32 to 64 fluid Ounces of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%, as found in grocery stores)
  • 2-4 Tablespoons of Ginger (fresh grated preferably, wrapped in a thin piece of cloth or in a tea ball. An old piece of nylon hose also works well.)

Instructions:

This and all bath therapies work best by first dry skin brushing the entire body (see Chapter 15, Dry Skin Brushing). This removes the layer of dead skin that may otherwise block the absorption of energy and nutrients from this bath and stimulates the blood and lymph fluids to rise to the skin to accept the healing effects of the bath.

  • Fill tub with warm water. Add the above ingredients.
  • Soak for at least 20 minutes. The beneficial effects of this bath are cumulative and increase in effectiveness the more you use them.
  • Recommended taken for at least seven consecutive days, or as recommended by yourdoctor. Continued use daily, or as needed, is fine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant.

Actions of Bath Ingredients

  • Hydrogen Peroxide – a simple, nontoxic molecule of H2O2 that is beneficial in oxidizing (breaking down) toxins as well as killing anaerobic microbes. It will also detoxify pesticides and petroleum-based toxins and oxidize metals. Hydrogen peroxide is also naturally produced by macrophages in the body to kill harmful bacteria. Most harmful bacteria are anaerobic and cannot survive in the presence of oxygen or hydrogen peroxide. Cancer cells are often very sensitive to increases in oxygen and cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments. When hydrogen peroxide is applied topically to a cut, the resulting bubbling is from the rapid release of free oxygen and, more importantly, from the killing of the bacteria in the cut. Friendly bacteria are aerobic and need and thrive on oxygen.

  • Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate) – Recent research has shown that when one soaks in a bath of magnesium sulfate, both magnesium and the sulfate independently increase measurably in the blood and urine. Magnesium sulfate helps stabilize Hydrogen Peroxide so that its ultimate breakdown into H2O and free oxygen is more gradual and functional to the process of benefiting the body. This research documents the very real beneficial aspects of this bath therapy. The Epsom Salt Council reports the following about the benefits of Magnesium in Epsom Salt baths.

  • Magnesium, a major component of Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate), is the second-most abundant element in human cells and the fourth-most important positively charged ion in the body. Magnesium also helps to regulate the activity of more than 325 enzymes and performs a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins. The National Academy of Sciences, however, reports that most Americans are magnesium deficient, which may account for our society's high rate of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis and joint pain, digestive maladies and stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a host of other ailments. The Academy estimates the average American male gets just 80% of the magnesium required for good health, while females get only 70% of their recommended levels. Nutritionists say Americans' magnesium levels have dropped more than 50% in the past century.

Raising magnesium levels may:
  • Improve heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots, and lowering blood pressure.
  • Improve the body's ability to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes.
  • Flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances.
  • Improve nerve function by regulating electrolytes. Also, calcium is the main conductor for electrical current in the body, and magnesium is necessary to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood.
  • Relieve stress. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body. Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation.

Sulfate:

The “sulfate” part of Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate). This form of sulfate must not be confused with “Sulfa” drugs, to which some people are allergic. People who are allergic to sulfa drugs will not react to the sulfate in Epsom Salt. The benefits of sulfate in the body are summarized by Dr. Rosemary Waring of the School of Biosciences, in Birmingham, England:i

  • Oral supplementation of Sulfate cannot be easily absorbed across the gut walls; therefore, by soaking in this bath, sulfate can be more efficiently supplemented. Sulfate is essential for many biological processes.
  • Sulfate is needed for formation of proteins in joints; decreased sulfate levels are common in the plasma and joint synovial fluids in cases of arthritis. Sulfate is also low in people with irritable bowel syndrome. ii, iii
  • Sulfate in necessary for sulfation, a major pathway in detoxifying drugs and endogenous (toxins from within the body) or exogenous (environmental) toxins.
  • Sulfate is necessary for the repair and formation of brain tissue. Reduced levels of sulfate can lead to faulty neurological connections and subsequent dysfunction.
  • Sulfate is needed for proper digestion and for proper utilization of digestive enzymes.
  • Sulfate is essential for the production of mucin, a protein which lines the intestines. Mucin stops food and drugs from sticking to the lining of the intestines. It also blocks the transport of toxins from the gut into the bloodstream.

Ginger - functions to open up the pores of the skin and increase the blood flow at the surface of the skin, so that the oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide can do its work in detoxifying poisons and kill bacteria and fungi. The pores open wider so that the magnesium sulfate can be more readily absorbed. Ginger is invigorating and can stimulate perspiration for the elimination of toxins.

Lyme Disease: A History of Chasing Bugs

Lyme Disease is an enigma to everyone, something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained.

The question has been asked as to when Lyme disease first arrived in the population. Of course there is the well-known discovery of Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes in the 80’s, but many doctors know that it has been around for a very long time, though it was called different things based upon what symptoms a person was having.

It is interesting to this author that medicine has been chasing one “bug” after another in the attempt to nail down exactly why this is one of the most prevalent diseases on the planet.

Lyme Disease: How Do You Know Your Medicine Is Working?

While it is generally agreed by all that Lyme Disease is caused by a spiral-shaped bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi and several other co-infections, determining what medicine will work for your unique body is far from scientific.

The reality is that as different as you look from any other person on the planet, your internal organs, tissues, and biochemistry is just as unique.

Childhood Stress and Lyme Disease

Childhood Lyme infections can be somewhat easier to address, due to the pristine nature of most children’s bodies, and if it is caught early. At the same time, Lyme in children can be devastating; depending upon their health heritage and the degree of balanced life and stress in the child’s life prior to becoming sick. These issues will dictate how well a child processes through the illness.

In a child’s life, stress comes from all directions. In children, as in adults, prolonged stress predisposes one to illness by changing the cellular chemistry.

Treating Post-Lyme Syndrome

Post-Lyme Syndrome is a clinical condition where symptoms remain beyond the point where the bacteria can be detected.

The damage to the body that was caused by the infections persists even though your doctor feels the medicines have killed all the bacteria.

Post-Lyme Syndrome is the most obvious problem in the idea that antibiotics are the answer to Lyme disease. It is also the problem with taking natural supplements that are touted to kill the bacteria. Killing the bacteria and even doing extensive detoxification treatments does nothing to actually repair the damaged tissues that are the source of your symptoms.

Leaky Brain Syndrome

Although many people have heard of Leaky Bowel Syndrome, few have heard of Leaky Brain Syndrome.

I coined this term when I became aware of the damaging effects on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) from the accumulation of ammonia in the brain. Ammonia in the brain is a primary cause of neurological and psychological hypersensitivity.

Ammonia alters the permeability of the BBB, enabling larger molecules to cross, such as common amino-acids, causing cerebral allergies. Ammonia-induced Leaky Brain Syndrome is one of the primary causes of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Cognitive dysfunction, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and a myriad of other chronic conditions.
